Equipment Recommendations

I won’t require specific equipment but I have some suggestions. The things I find work the best are:
  1. A 6’ Leather Leash 1/4 - 3/8 inch wide. Your leash should feel comfortable in your hand. Leather doesn’t burn when pulled across your skin. A 20 foot long line for Basic 3.
  2. A well fitted flat collar. I ask that you not use choke or prong collars in class. I would prefer that you get rid of it altogether but please try to do the exercises without it. If your dog is a serious puller I am happy to fit you with a Gentle Leader. I prefer the Gentle Leader because it allows you to redirect the dog’s attention by turning his head. As you probably know by now a motivated dog can pull against the pressure on his neck for a long time. The Gentle Leader works like a halter on a horse. It would be impossible to stop a thousand pound animal by it’s neck but by turning it’s head with a halter you can.
  3. A bait bag or small fanny pack for treats. I use food rewards.
  4. Lots of Treats. I use a variety of very small treats; Natural Balance Roll, deli meats, dried smoked salmon. Treats should be exciting to your dog but only a little taste is needed so make them tiny. Large pieces will take to long to eat slowing down exercises and fill the dog up too quickly. Always bring more than you think you’ll need and experiment with new things.
  5. A favorite soft toy i.e. squeaky stuffed animal, tug rope, old sock or rag. Find a favorite and keep it away from your dog unless you are training.
